Nearly $80,000 stolen from business through altered cheques: GC police

GARDEN CITY, NY – The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending April 5.

March 30

  • Items were reported stolen from a vehicle parked in a driveway on Lee Road.
  • Officers responded to several railway barrier malfunctions at various level crossings along the Hempstead LIRR line.
  • A truck driver on St. James Street South was charged with driving with a suspended license and driving in a no commercial vehicle zone.
  • A Stewart Avenue driver has been charged with driving with a suspended license plate and excessive speed.
  • A driver on Clinch Avenue at Greenridge Avenue has been charged with driving without a license and passing a stop sign.

  • Fire and police responded to Adelphi University for a fire alarm and determined the cause was an aerosol.
  • A driver on Clinton Road has been charged with driving with a suspended license plate and excessively tinted windows.
  • Officers arrested a driver for leaving the scene after being involved in a two-vehicle crash on Clinton Road that injured an occupant of the other vehicle.

April 1

  • A contractor was charged with operating electrical lawn care equipment before 8 a.m.
  • A lamppost in front of a restaurant on Franklin Avenue was found knocked over by unknown means.
  • A driver on Rockaway Avenue has been charged with driving out of class, suspended registration and speeding in a school zone.

  • Officers have been assigned to traffic and security details for the St. Joseph 5K Run/Walk for Tomorrow’s Hope.
  • Firefighters and police responded to a restaurant for a fire alarm and determined the cause to be construction.
  • A driver on Clinton Road has been charged with driving without a license and speeding.

April 3

  • Officers investigated two vehicle thefts. The first vehicle was reported stolen from a residence on Pine Street. He was tracked to Brooklyn and picked up. The second vehicle was reported stolen from a residence on Fifth Street. It was tracked to a location in Mount Vernon and recovered. Investigations are ongoing.
  • Loose change was stolen from a vehicle parked in an alley on Poplar Street. Other nearby vehicles were searched with no reported casualties.
  • A driver on Clinton Road has been charged with driving with fraudulent license plates, excessive speed and driving without a licence.
  • Officers arrested a 19-year-old driver on New Hyde Park Road for eight driver’s license suspensions, tinted windows and faulty brakes.

April 4

  • A business said three of its checks were stolen, altered and cashed for $79,000.
  • Several unauthorized charges totaling $5,600 were reportedly charged to a resident’s credit card account.
  • A Rockaway Avenue driver has been charged with driving with fraudulent license plates and unregistered operation.
  • Officers and firefighters responded to Adelphi University for a fire alarm and discovered it was activated by hairspray.
  • A Rainbow Place driver has been charged with suspended license, suspended registration and tinted windows.

April 5

  • A resident’s identity was stolen and used in an attempt to secure a car loan and car insurance.
  • A driver on Clinton Road has been charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
